Tasting Notes

Kent Humphrey of Eric Kent Cellars went from studying French literature to writing advertising copy to finally letting his wine hobby turn into a full-fledged career at the age of 33. Fortunately for us, it seems to be the one that has stuck. For the last 15 years, Kent has been making dynamic single-varietal wines (mostly Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah) from excellent sites in Sonoma.

We blew through the last vintage of this Chardonnay - no surprise given the quality for the price and the generous yet balanced flavor profile. A nose that shows toast and pineapple leads to flavors that show a lovely pull between ripe citrus, acidity and nicely integrated barrel notes.

A worthy if not even more engaging follow-up to the 2015, this new vintage offers a rich palate with fresher forward fruit and nervy energetic acidity. Green apple, Meyer lemon peel, wet stones and a touch of spice make this as close to a domestic profiled Meursault that I have had in some time. Half the price of any comparable Burgundy or top-flight California chard by any measure, you need to buy this exceptional white by the case before it disappears like the 2015 did.

I hate to say it, but I had some preconceived expectations for this wine. Namely I can't believe that this is boutique-y Sonoma Chard for $20! I really expected there to be something wrong with it because I'm used to selling this for twice the price. That's the start of the good news. What you have here is proper California Chard created with the utmost care. The style here sort of straddles the typical pungent powerful aromatics of Sonoma with plenty of citrus peel, bright orchard fruit, subtle floral elements and a twinge of herbal pithiness. On the palate, where I was expecting tons of oak, you get an elegance and balance that's rarely matched in the $20 price point. Great inviting acidity and a lovely pinch of point mineral balance out the heady oily texture. We're very lucky to be the first stop when great wine makers need to move wine and I'd be hard pressed to find a single customer that wouldn't agree it's a screaming deal.

If you were fortunate enough to get in on our offer for the 2015 “1 KM West”; which sold out in less than 48 hours; then you know what a screaming deal this is. Based on a long standing relationship we were able to get a sizeable parcel of this wine from Kent at an unmentionable price. The 2016 vintage possesses a touch more lift and freshness than the 2015 version. The bright acidity carries the essence of fresh sliced pear, green and red apple, a spritz of fresh cut citrus, and a just a hint of wood spice on the finish. This is a delightful Sonoma Coast chardonnay that can serve as an aperitif or paired with shellfish. When you consider that the wine is worth the original $44 price tag, you’ll be stunned when you see what we’re offering it for.

Very bright and energetic Chardonnay; pineapple, lime rind, and subtle oak on the nose that integrates beautifully into the palate. Razor sharp acidity makes this wine super refreshing. Also lean enough to be functional with a wide array of dishes from fried calamari to lemon pepper chicken wings. This is a minimally oaked, cool climate Chardonnay that shows very nicely.
