Charles van Canneyt uses fruit from 11 different parcels in his textbook village Chambolle. This is a Pinot drinker's Pinot, all scented and refined, with an easy-drinking summer berry sweetness with tangy acidity and a patina of 15% new wood. Hard to keep your hands off it. The 2017 Chambolle AC from Domaine Hudelot was showing very nicely out of barrel. The nose is pure and very enticing, offering up scents of plums, black cherries, a fine base of soil, gamebird and a floral topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nicely plush on the attack, with a good core, a dollop of backend tannin and a long, tangy and classy finish. Good juice.
Produced from fully eleven parcels scattered around the appellation, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village offers up pretty aromas of sweet cherries, raspberries, candied peel and woodsmoke. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, fine-boned and succulent, with melting tannins, juicy acids and a giving core of fruit. While it won't hit the same heights, this will be more accessible than the 2016 and 2015 renditions. This is a successful vintage for Charles Van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat. The wines are supple and charming, gaining in-depth, seriousness and complexity as one ascends the hierarchy of appellations and vine age. After the concentrated and compelling 2015s and 2016s, both vintages built for the cellar despite their decidedly different styles, 2017 represents a high quality but more immediate, structurally open-knit year for the Domaine, and for impatient consumers, that is no bad thing. The domaine's roster of appellations will be familiar to readers by now, with the exception of a promising new Meursault from the lieu-dit Clos des Ecoles—a parcel formerly farmed by the Domaine Coche-Dury. Matured in around 20% new oak, the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny Village, which comes from 11 parcels scattered around the appellation, has a brisk black cherry and raspberry bouquet that is quite airy in style. The palate is sorbet-fresh on the entry with a fine line of acidity, and lightly spiced with red fruit merging with more black fruit toward the energetic finish. Enjoy this over the next decade. (NM)
(from 11 different parcels). Here too the nose is exuberantly fresh and expressive with its array that is comprised by essence of red pinot fruit, spice and a whiff of oak toast. The lilting and lacy lighter weight flavors that are markedly saline in character on the clean, detailed and dusty. This is quite pretty and if it can add depth with a few years of bottle it could be potentially excellent.
