Deeper and more concentrated than its Chambolle counterpart, the 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village offers up notes of wild berries, smoked meats, incense and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied with good depth and amplitude, balanced by bright acids and framed by supple tannins. This is a definite success. This is a successful vintage for Charles Van Canneyt at Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat. The wines are supple and charming, gaining in-depth, seriousness and complexity as one ascends the hierarchy of appellations and vine age. After the concentrated and compelling 2015s and 2016s, both vintages built for the cellar despite their decidedly different styles, 2017 represents a high quality but more immediate, structurally open-knit year for the Domaine, and for impatient consumers, that is no bad thing. The domaine's roster of appellations will be familiar to readers by now, with the exception of a promising new Meursault from the lieu-dit Clos des Ecoles—a parcel formerly farmed by the Domaine Coche-Dury. The 2017 Vosne-Romanée AC from Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat is also a fine example of its level, offering up impressive purity on the nose in its mix of black raspberries, black cherries, raw cocoa, gamebird and a lovely base of dark soil tones. On the palate the wine is refined, focused and full-bodied, with a sappy core of fruit, impressive mineral drive, moderate tannins and a long, vibrant and really well-balanced finish. This is delicious juice in the making. Drink between 2023-2060. 90+
(this has some young vines 1ers added to a blend of 90% Basses Maizières and 10% Les Vigneux). Reduction dominates the nose today but there is good freshness and vibrancy to the sleek, rich and delicious medium-bodied flavors that aren’t especially dense but they do offer better than average depth and persistence in a moderately structured package.
The 2017 Vosne-Romanée Village has a backward, rather sultry nose at the moment, featuring black cherries mixed with cassis, and the new oak playing a fine supporting role. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp tannin and more black fruit than red. Full of energy, with just a bit of CO2 toward the finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle once released. (NM)
