Tasting Notes

From the winery: "Originally, Château Tour Léognan was the estate located right next to Château Carbonnieux. In 1956 Marc Perrin bought both properties; he reorganized all the planting-layout and Tour Léognan became the second wine of Carbonnieux. From the early stages, Château Tour Léognan is made from the younger vineyards of Château Carbonnieux (vine younger than 12 years of age). It follows the same process and deserves the same care as its bigger brother. Being drier and fruitier, the Château Tour Léognan wines can be served younger but they still reflect the rich mineral variety of the soils, so specific to the appellation."

Are you a Serious Zinfandel lover ? warm, deep, lush, dark fruit Zin? What about an old vine Carignon? spice, mouthwatering fruit and great but not offensive tannin? Do you get excited about a very delightful elegant Bordeaux that is versatile and will relate to any varietal lover that you are? Do not let this be the one that got away before you gave it a chance. I want to be fascinated and intrigued about any wine I try. I love a wine that makes my taste buds sparkle with joy and I can get all googly eyes about it. I like to be able to share that joy with people and think of myself as a great story teller, only in this case I will be a wine teller in reality! There should be such a thing by the way. I tasted this wine and my face lit up. everyone around me said; Oh! she likes it. and did I ? No! I LOVED it. warm, cozy, abundant fruit, that leather you expect in Bordeaux, a hint of cinnamon, vanilla, dark cocoa powder and a lovely memorable finish. Who knew a 20 dollar wine will turn me into a Scheherazade of exciting stories? only the story lies within the sips of this wine.

Coco, Creme de Cassis and crushed stone bound together with finesse, going long and broadening outward as the finish progresses. Top producers make top wine, and the second wine of a great producer for 20 bucks is a steal. I've had this wine with food, but also just paired with conversation and it performed admirably in both roles. One of my favorite wines in the store for easy nights in, it's easily a by-the-case candidate.

The 2nd wine of Chateau Carbonnieux gives all the class and sophistication you would expect from that Great Growth but really over delivers on the price/quality ratio. The wine is clean, sleek and focused with blackberry fruit, gravel and unsweetened baking chocolate flavors and scents all in wonderful equilibrium. The stony middle is fruit filled, rich, poised and elegant but unfolds into a strong finish laced with pure mineral. Class in a glass for only $20.00.

A fantastic wine. This is a well-structured yet very accessible Bordeaux with wild dark fruits, cocoa notes, lush texture and vivid acidity. It's been a rather cold and damp winter in Los Angeles and these days after work I usually crank up the heat and crawl into bed with a book. However, after we opened this up to taste at the store, I instead went home, cranked up the heat, whipped up an old-school beef and mashed potato dinner and took my time to thoroughly enjoy this soul-warming and downright delicious wine.

The Tour Leognan caused quite an impression on our staff upon tasting. Very accessible, very elegant, with soft, perfectly ripe tannins - keep in mind, this is from a spectacular vintage, but still it is a very young wine. The fruit is very apparent at this point, but also showing freshly roasted coffee beans, and cocoa, and those notes round it up and take it to a level rarely seen on a wine of this young age and price range. Kudos!

Coming from the same vineyards and the same careful cellar-work as Château Carbonnieux, the younger sibling Château Tour Leognan provides the young-vine version for earlier drinking pleasure, and is a joyful way to enjoy fresh Bordeaux while you wait for the big dogs to mature. From the winery: "Originally, Château Tour Léognan was the estate located right next to Château Carbonnieux. In 1956 Marc Perrin bought both properties; he reorganized all the planting-layout and Tour Léognan became the second wine of Carbonnieux." The heralded 2016 vintage is better than the very successful 2015 vintage. Vibrant, spicy, blackberry dominated wine. Can cellar well, but will be very good in a year or two. Drink tonight after decanting one hour.
