K&L Notes

Jacky Blot discovered wine as a junior pâtissier while working at a restaurant in Paris in his younger days. Eventually deciding to follow the winemaking track in life, he ultimately came to acquire the Domaine la Taille aux Loups in Montlouis sur Loire, some twenty years ago, and eventually added the Domaine de la Butte in Bourgueil to his portfolio. The two estates both reside along the Loire and perhaps do not have the same notoriety as their kissing cousins, Vouvray and Chinon. But what Jacky does is extremely special and his wines rival the quality levels of many of those more famous regions' top producers. The Domaine de la Butte "Pied de la Butte" comes from the lower part of one of Jacky's most favored vineyards. These 35+ year old vines reside in a mix of clay and silex (flint) over pure limestone. The wine is fermented in a mix of cement tanks and older barrels with indigenous yeasts. Bottled unfined and unfiltered, this is lovely unadulterated Cabernet Franc.

I love how different wines express themselves in their own unique ways. Lately, I've had a fair share of people who come in and ask about our organic wines. I want to share some background information on organic wines and share some details on one of my personal favorites. An organic wine is a wine made from grapes that have been grown without the use of artificial or synthetic chemicals, such as herbicides and pesticides. To keep the weeds and pests away, organic farmers work with nature rather than against it. They do this by boosting their vineyard's biodiversity. By doing that, to me, one can really taste the "terroir" or the "where-ness" of the wine. The more complex the wine is, the more it will spark thoughtfulness and appreciation, sip after sip. With that said, a perfect example is this wonderful Cab Franc from Bourgueil. Intense cherry, strawberry, and violet notes shine through due to the vines being grown on clay and flint soils. Then, raspberry and spice evolve into leather and roasted meat which then fold into mineral undertones. All together, the intense fruit of red raspberries and black pepper marry perfectly with the leather notes, robust earthiness, and stony minerality. The finish bursts with a fresh, bright acidity that tingles on the palate. That's a lot of action for such a modest price. But, don't take my word for it...pick up a bottle (or case) for yourself. You won't be disappointed!

From the lower slope of one of Jacky's best vineyards in Bourgueil, this is a tremendous introduction to the world of Cabernet Franc if you are not already a convert. Plenty of bold cherry notes, with flavors of black olive, lavender and clove. It is polished and fruit forward enough to engage immediately but structured to handle a few more years in the cellar. It rises to the level of some of the other greats in the region like Breton and Baudry and is not-to-be missed!

The gravel and clay soils help make this a brighter and fresher version of Cabernet Franc but there is plenty of depth to the ripe red berries, cola and savory tobacco flavors and aromas embedded in the rich middle. There is a lingering sweetness to the gravely and mineral laced finish.
