K&L Notes

Located in the foothills of Mont Ventoux lies the one of the top producers in the Ventoux region of the Rhone - Domaine de Fondreche. In the shadow of the mountain, the vines are an average age of 40 years planted in chalky clay over limestone. The Ventoux Rouge is composed of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre and is aged in a mix of vat, foudre and concrete egg.

Ventoux has been making wine for 2000 years. Talk about bang for your buck! This spicy Rhone took me by surprise. Currently, this wine is created from forty year old vines and has been grown in clay and limestone - and that really makes for a complex and rich wine. The flavors are meaty with a blast of blackberry, spice, and black pepper. Just when you think you'd be overpowered by the fruit, you get this amazing lift of acidity that is mouthwatering. This is an ideal wine for any summer gathering. I think that this wine would go especially well with spicy BBQ or peace in the house.

One of our great acquisitions this year has to be adding Fondreche to our direct import program. I've had my eye on them for a few years now and when they expressed interest in joining our portfolio, I jumped at the chance. The Ventoux rouge is sexy and harmonious capturing the essence of its higher altitude vineyards with loads of fresh but brambly red and black fruits. There is a lot going on with this wine including its generous spice and light tobacco notes. A few minutes after it is open, it picks up weight and has a wonderfully fleshy and glycerol mouthfeel. The 2017 vintage has no shortage of concentration and acidity which will make this a great drink for years to come. I had a bottle last night with pizza and it did not disappoint.

where the wines are produced along the lower slopes of the Ventoux mountain and at the foot of the Vaucluse Mountains. It is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvedre. Dark fruits such as Cassis, Blackberries, very textured and layered along with pleasant floral aromas. It is well Structured with great tannin also incredibly lush, spiced and balanced. It pairs perfectly with grilled and stewed meats like beef, veal, pork, chicken and of course game and definitely holds up well to hearty dishes like cassoulet. Plan a nice dinner with this gorgeous wine for friends and family.

Domaine de Fondrèche is a new producer for us, and currently exclusive to K&L. I’ve already fallen in love with their elegant rosé, and now this complex Rouge is gracing our shelves. Beautifully herbal on the nose with that signature Ventoux character, the 2017 shows great berry fruit and garrigue notes through to the pleasantly dry finish. Fondrèche is a delicious addition to our Rhône lineup, and value-priced to boot! I'm already planning my next meal around this soon-to-be staple red.

If you’ve ever watched the annual Tour de France you’re familiar with the legendary climb up the fabled Mount Ventoux. As the cyclists wind their way up the mount, vignerons tend to their vines. This is the second wine I’ve tasted from Fondreche this month (the first being their excellent 2018 rosé) and I am very taken by both. This is textbook southern Rhone wine in the style of Gigondas or Cairanne but at a ridiculously low price. You get all of the telltale fruit of strawberries and raspberries with just the right amount of roasted herbs and just a touch of the southern France funk. How do they pack so much flavor and character into a wine at this price? This is arguably one of the best of its kind I’ve tasted this year.

This is a very robust and serious Ventoux wine made of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre. On the nose, I was scared that it may be a bit big of a wine with it's dark black fruit aromas and stewed spices but the palate is juicy, vibrant and incredibly balanced. K&L is proud to offer this great Rhone wine at a wallet friendly price. Bottoms up!
