(made with whole clusters): Brilliant ruby. Deeply pitched red and dark berry aromas are complicated by notes of candied violet, licorice and cola. Sappy and expansive on the palate, offering juicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that pick up spiciness with air. Closes taut and long, with sneaky tannins and lingering bitterness. Cédric Chignard told me that the key difference between Juliénas and Fleurie is the fact that the soil in Juliénas is blue granite and volcanic while at Fleurie it's pink granite. (JR)
Really fun and interesting thanks to orange peel, orange blossom and dried fruit on the nose. Medium to light body, bright acidity and a citrusy finish.
The 2013 Juliénas Beauvernay comes from blue volcanic rock, the lieu-dit on an exposed side that is cooled by a northern breeze. It has a crisp and fresh black cherry and blueberry-scented bouquet with hints of crushed violet coming through. The palate is fresh on the entry with chalky tannin, a gentle grip in the mouth with a fresh and vibrant finish. This is a lively Juliénas that should drink well over 4 to 5 years. Very fine. I met young Cédric Chignard when I visited Château Thivin this year. He told me that he commenced working at the estate from 1998, initially working alongside his father Michel up until 2007. Located in Fleurie with a majority of the vines located in “Les Moriers,” four generations of the family have tended vines that cover around seven hectares. There is also a plot in Juliénas in the “Beauvernay” that was inherited from his grandmother on the maternal side of the family. Cédric picks his fruit by hand and practices a traditional Beaujolais vinification. “In 2013 I picked the grapes later,” he told me. I asked what differences he found between the two most recent vintages. “There is more intensity in 2014, but I find more freshness in 2013.” These are excellent wines: clean and pure, occasionally Burgundy-like on the nose despite the traditional fermentation, his Fleurie surfeit with mineralité and tension. They come highly recommended for any Beaujolais and especially Fleurie aficionados. (NM)
