2016 is one of the finest Orenos and among the best of Italy's Bordeaux style reds. It showcases deep and rich fruit that possesses an international flair combined with unmistakable Tuscan flavors and character. Although it's quite accessible now, it's sure to improve with time in the cellar. Steak with this one!

Oreno has always been one of my favorite Super Tuscan styled reds. I've been tasting and buying this wine for over a decade and it never disappoints. Full of saturated blackcurrant fruit, blackberry compote and sweet baking spices it is mouthful of wine that shows the potential for these grape varieties in this region. For a Bordeaux equivalent, it reminds me of a young Pontet Canet. The Oreno's tannins are supple, the length is long and the flavors deep. Exotic and sexy now, it wants a long decant but give it 5 or 6 years in the cellar and you'll be rewarded with a gorgeous wine that would hang with the top wines from any comparable producer or top flight Bordeaux for that matter.

The nose is this wine is profound, I've had it several times now over the course of years but it has gone from an effusively if not ebullient fruity wine in its primary years to a more focused, savory and complex wine. The nose has layers of earth, spice and density and while it has lots of fruit underneath it doesn't smell new worldish. On the palate the wine has density, ultra fine tannins that show an exquisite balance between suppleness and muscle. The upfront Merlot gives texture to balance out the Cabernet Sauvignon's structure and the Petit Verdot with a bit of muscle and color. Long, long powerful finish a wine of tremendous aging potential, truly outstanding.

Oreno has been a favorite of mine back to the 2006 when it started to get acclaim that matched its much more expensive peers. When it is on point, it is one of the most rewarding reds you'll find, and although this leaves a lot for the 2016 to live up to, it does so effortlessly. The aromas are subtle, with a gentle floral note and pure red fruits. The palate is compact and focused, one of the great signatures of the vintage, with a streak of acidity that lifts the flavors of black cherry and wild strawberry. 2016 Oreno is very polished and composed, a bit less forward than some recent vintages, but perhaps better for it. A great vintage of Oreno, this deserves a long decant now if you can't resist giving it a whirl, but it will be best with a few years in the cellar, drinking well for the next 10 to 20 years.
