K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "Aromas of blackberry, blue fruited, concentrated and everything you would expect from Rutherford Cabernet. Soft developed tannins. The Rutherford bench in Napa is home to some of the Valley ´s renowned Cabernet Sauvignons. The fruit was carefully fermented in open-top 1-ton fermenters. Skins were punched down by hand twice per day, 2.5 weeks on the skins. Aged two years in 60% new Seguin Moreau French oak barrels and 40% neutral (4+ years old) French oak."

This is top notch, classic, Rutherford Cabernet for an absolute song! After being offered a parcel of these highly rated, yet under-the-radar, Grand Napa wines for a fraction of their SRP, we tasted very diligently on several occasions and time and time again I was just floored by the quality, power and balance the wines possessed. The Rutherford Cab starts out with an explosive nose of briary, blackcurrant fruit with tobacco leaf, cedar and that celebrated "Rutherford Dust" quality. The palate is luxurious and suave with lush fruit, very fine, polished tannins framed by classy high-end French oak. It's rich and powerful but not high-octane or jammy. Really concentrated and intense but refined at the same time. This combination of quality (first and foremost) plus press (94+WA) and discount (60+% off) doesn't come around very often. We're stocking our cellars with this beauty for the next decade plus. It might be that long before we see this type of deal again!

Talk about unbelievable. This 2016 Grand Napa Rutherford came out of nowhere and nearly knocked me off my feet. Spice, smoke, and a touch of pepper dominate the nose, but what’s really crazy about this wine is the palate. It is intensely concentrated--a power monster that is mouth-coating delicious with dark fruits like cassis and blackberries and perfectly toned vanilla spice towards the back palate. But this is far from a fruit bomb, it is refined and balanced as you would expect from exceptional Napa Cab. That’s not even to mention the finish on this wine that just carries and carries. One of the best deals I’ve come across in Napa for a long, long time.

Having no experience with the wines from Grand Napa, I didn't know what to expect. In all honesty, I thought it would be a bit flashy or anonymous. But what impressed me that it was very focused, detailed, and poised. This is a textured Napa Cab that shows it's Rutherford roots and delivers classic cassis and deep cherry flavors. It is beautifully textured and a shows the freshness and elegance of the 2016 vintage. All of this wraps up in a resounding finish that lingers on the palate for 30+ seconds and shows the true depth. This is my new favorite Cab in the store. Drink it now with a healthy decant and you won't be disappointed, but this is a wine that will age easily for another fifteen to twenty years.
