The dark ruby/purple-colored 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape displays an impressive constitution, with full body, considerable structure, and admirable delineation. Spice box, vanillin, and black fruits show through, but the wine is big, backward, and needing 2-3 years of cellaring, somewhat atypical for a 1999. It should last for 15+ years. (RMP)
The 1999 Château de la Gardine Châteauneuf-du-Pape possesses a slight roasted profile with a nutty, ripe nose of scorched earth, asphalt, dark fruit and spice notes. The palate is better with medium to full body, a ripe, mouthfilling texture and a long finish. I’d drink these over the next couple of years.
Good flavors, with licorice and chalk. Medium-bodied, with nice red and black fruit and a firm tannin structure. Intense, crisp aftertaste. Drink now through 2005.
