K&L Notes

The 2016 Pizzella Malbec is sourced from Altamira in the La Consulta region of the Uco Valley. This single vineyard Malbec is aged for 12 months. 20% is aged in new French oak barrels, 60% in 2nd and 3rd use French and American oak, and 20% unoaked. The soil contains sandy loam, sand, silt, and clay with 20% stones covered by limestone. A beautiful red and purple color with aromas of black cherries, dark fruits, dark chocolate and baker’s spice. On the palate, the wine shows dense, dark berry and plum flavors along with hints of sandalwood and spice, and even a hint of violets in the finish. This is a full-bodied and well-structured wine that is incredibly full of life and born to be enjoyed with food and friends.

By the time midweek rolls around, I want a wine that is dependable and uncomplicated, that will deliver in flavor and price. Simply put, I want this Malbec - tasty and juicy, full of ripe plum and dark fruits, some cocoa, hints of coffee and with gently gripping tannins. Very easy drinking but bearing wonderful balance and structure, this is very well-crafted and has a lot more to offer than your basic Malbec. Buy it and enjoy it. You'll be back for a case.

This wine is a charmer. Within a few minutes of the bottle being opened the wine blossoms; plum, dark cherry, dark berries, subtle floral notes, subtle spice and a whiff of mocha. The palate is round and rich with more of that generous dark berry fruit, just enough tannin to let you know that it is there and enough spice to accent the fruit. This is a wine of immediate gratification, it smells good, it taste good it pair perfectly with grilled meat but requires nothing more than a glass and a corkscrew. An ideal weekday/party red.

Years ago, when I was a buyer for the Argentine category, I was always fond of the generous and well-fruited La Posta. Made by the even-handed and very talented Susana Balbo, she has sussed out all the delicious black raspberry and chocolate-y tones as well as giving the wine the structure necessary to keep it lively and engaging on the palate. It is rich with fine tannins and begs to be paired with a marinated and grilled skirt steak. This is a gorgeous daily drinker that WAY over delivers on the fruit and classic Argentine Malbec character.

A great option for fans of South American Malbec, the La Posta del Viñatero "Pizzella Vineyard" shows depth and richness through the palate but finishes dry. Although dense cassis fruit is there, the 2017 is not quite as jammy as Mendoza can be, thanks to the higher altitude vineyard site. Plus, there are notes of baking spice and licorice and lovely integrated tannins, giving this wine a lot of complexity for the price.

This is an excellent example of why Malbec became so popular. All of the better attributes are on display here including the lovely price tag! The wine packs plenty of soft juicy fruit, but there’s also plenty of structure with just a touch of tannins that dust and coat the palate. Relatively new to the to the winemaking scene, the Pizzella family farm a 10-hectare plot in the Uco Valley. This is cool-climate Malbec grown at 3,600 feet elevation. I like that they use primarily neutral French oak barrels of which only 10% are new. This allows the fruit shine. This is an excellent value.

The nose of this wine makes you think this wine is very full-bodied and is full of dense fruit and earth flavors, in actuality, it is. I wrote in my notes broad, dense, dark and then noticed they were already written on the label! I could have mailed in this review without thinking but that’s not my style! On the palate the wine is supple, smooth and shows a blend of earth and spice although I didn’t find the “Berry Flavors” that were also written on the label. The wine has a good weight, I hesitate to use the word balance because for me it lacked a bit of acidity, however the tannins seem to frame the wine well and give a solid representation of the varietal and at this price point it’s a no-brainer for Malbec lovers.
