Tasting Notes

The owner of York Creek is Fritz Maytag (Of Anchor Steam beer fame). He has farmed the property since 1968, selling grapes from his 125-acre mountain vineyard to many outstanding names in the California wine industry (Ridge Vineyards among them). York Creek began making a small amount of its own wine in 1992, and today less than 1,000 cases of Meritage are bottled a year produced entirely from estate grapes grown on Spring Mountain above St. Helena. Winery's notes: "In the early years we made wine from all four of the top varieties grown in Bordeaux, and made our blends a little differently each year. Though each vintage was predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, the blends also contained varying amounts of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. York Creek Estate consists of roughly 125 acres of land high above the Napa and Sonoma valleys, on the crest of the Mayacamas Range of mountains. It is an area which on the Napa side has long been known as 'Spring Mountain.' For more than 100 years this area has been famous for its dark and intensely flavorful wines. We purchased the original parcel in 1968, and have been adding land and planting and replanting vineyards ever since. In a 'mountain' vineyard the soil, exposure, and steepness vary constantly, and so we plant where it is appropriate, and where it is not we have wild and beautiful forests. The result is a marvelously complicated pattern of grapes mixed with native forest."

The price for what you're getting with this wine is unreal. This is one of the staff's favorite from the tasting and I'm sure you'll see why. The nose is full of chocolate covered blueberries, black cherries, with a light caramel and raspberry sauce. The mouthfeel is silky and luxurious, soft tannins and notes of perfectly ripe blueberries, lavender, and chocolate once again coming through. Drinking beautifully now, I expect this bottle to fly out of our warehouse at this price.

I have long loved 2001 as a vintage in Napa Valley. It was a vintage that produced classically styled, long lived wines. Slow and steady ripening throughout the summer and into fall, allowed for great flavor and tannin development without losing that crucial acidity needed for graceful development in bottle. For mountain sites like York Creek this allowed for potential ageing in excess of 20 years. The 2001 Meritage is in a perfect spot for drinking. The fruit is now perfectly interwoven with the more secondary flavors coming to the forefront. Leather, cedar, tobacco and briary notes mingle with dusty red fruit and earth. The tannins are still present but beautifully resolved and elegant nicely elongating the wine on the palate and begging for a lamb chop. More fruit emerges with air before melding back into the tide of savory umami flavors lovers of aged Cabernet and Bordeaux style wines crave. This wine was purchased direct from the property and has been kept in a commercial wine storage its entire life - perfect provenance. And the price - $29.99 - too good...but true!

Probably one of the better deals in the store right now! Here is a perfectly aged Spring Mountain Meritage, available for a song. If you are looking for great steak wine, you've found it. This lovely, mellow Meritage shows beautifully with plenty of savory elements coming into play on the palate to complement the beautiful, plummy, black fruit. The tannin is perfectly integrated and the whole flows seamlessly. I'd recommend decanting for a half hour before consuming. The wine will continue to evolve in your glass as it opens over the course of another hour after that.
