A discreet application of wood sets of a similar fruit profile that is perhaps even fresher. The sleek, intense and utterly delicious flavors exude a subtle minerality on the lingering finish that is also ever-so-mildly rustic. Note that this is slightly firmer and will need at least 4 to 5 years of bottle age to flesh out and soften.

(losses to frost were only 30% here, vs. 80% for the Grasses Têtes): Good dark red. Very ripe aromas of black cherry and mocha. At once sweeter and sappier than the Grasses Têtes, offering noteworthy concentration and definition to its juicy dark fruit flavors. Showing much more early personality too. Finishes with serious but pliant tannins.(ST)

Aromas of pretty berries and dried ceps precede a medium-full, moderately concentrated palate with a bright core of fruit and fine but taut, chalky tannins. Like all of Clair’s wines, this will demand a bit of time to show at its best. Drinking Window 2022 - 2030. (WK)

The 2016 Marsannay les Longeroies has a much more fragrant and fruit-driven bouquet than the Grasses Têtes, red cherries and wild strawberry fruit to the fore. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp and chalky tannin. This feels reassuringly focused and delivers a saline finish that leaves you wanting more. Fine.(NM)
