In the running for the best Pinot Noir to come from Paso Robles, the 2017 Pinot Noir HMR has a medium ruby color as well as pretty, elegant notes of red and black fruits, dried earth, and subtle herbal notes. It’s pure, elegant, nicely balanced, and medium-bodied and has beautiful Pinot Noir charm.
Shimmering red. Musky, smoke-tinged cherry pit and ripe red berries on the fragrant nose. Sappy, focused and lively on the palate, offering juicy, sharply delineated raspberry, bitter cherry and rose pastille flavors and a refreshing hint of blood orange. Turns sweeter on the persistent, red-fruit- and floral-tinged finish, which is given shape by smooth tannins. (JR)
Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir HMR Estate Vineyard gives up wild blackberries, tree bark, underbrush, Bing cherries and fresh cranberries with nuances of citrus peel and oolong tea leaves. The palate is light to medium-bodied, delicate but intense, with earth-laced fruits, a soft, grainy frame and juicy lift on the finish. (EB)
Hailing from the oldest Pinot Noir vineyard on the Central Coast, planted in 1964, this bottling starts with aromas of carnation, cinnamon, red plum and a hint of red apple. An array of herbs, from tarragon to thyme, show on the sip, decorating the strawberry and red-plum flavors. Vanilla pops on the finish. *Editors' Choice* (MK)
