Lemon oil and chamomile tincture create a lifted, ethereal nose, preceding richer notions of dried pear and apple. The dry palate reveals concentration and a fluidity that has something balm-like about it. The lemon freshness at the core stays arrow-like and darts across the palate in exciting fashion in a counterpoint to the rich fruit notes. The joy of Riesling is right here. Drink now through 2030.(AK)
Vivid straw-yellow. Fresh aromas of white stone fruit, lemon verbena and chamomile. More linear, citrusy and rigid than the Eichberg Riesling, but also has less body and size and is not quite as long or complex. The finish hints at fennel and licorice. Baur’s Brand Riesling vines grow in the Schinkenberg (also called Schneckelsburg) section of the grand cru, one that gives completely different wines from those made with grapes grown elsewhere in the Brand (indeed, I can make a case that the Schinkenberg should be a premier cru, separate from the Brand). Nevertheless, Baur was lucky enough to buy this parcel of over 40-year-old vines in 2007.(ID)
