Foursquare Rum Distillery is located on a former sugar plantation that dates back to approximately 1720, within the tiny Caribbean island of Barbados. The distillery was re-opened by the Seale family in 1996, and distilling operations and blending are currently directed by Richard Seale, 4th Generation Trader/Distiller of R.L. Seale & Co. They've become renowned as one of the most important and diligent distillers of rum in the world. The new single vintage cask strength is a Single Blended Rum from the estate's traditional pot still and twin column stills. These were aged for 12 years in first, second and third fill ex-bourbon barrels before being blended and bottled at full strength. As with all Foursquare rums, absolutely no adulteration or adjustment is done before bottling. Just pure Barbados in a bottle.

Foursquare was the first rum that captivated me and led me down the lengthy rabbit hole that is sugarcane spirits. I used to say these static-aged ex-bourbon barrel releases drink like cask-strength bourbon made from molasses instead of corn. While there's an element of truth to that with flavors of caramel, toasted oak and woody spice, these rums show distinctly tropical qualities you don't find in Kentucky whiskey. Hints of ripe banana and papaya play off the dark sugar tones, though the finish remains perfectly dry. The concentration and density are unparalleled as well, a result of time spent ageing on the island.

This is from one of my favorite rum distilleries, and the 2007 is an excellent example of what Foursquare is capable of. The nose is expressive, with caramel and subtle floral notes. In the mouth, there is a great entry, with rich and complex flavors, and a mouth-coating texture. This is an excellent rum with no water, but with one or two drops of water it opens up and becomes softer and a little more subtle.

Foursquare is one of the legends of the rum world, producing some of the richest and most interesting rums in modern production. The 2007 is absolutely no exception. I picked up a bottle for myself recently and was floored the moment I poured myself a glass. Lovely notes of stone fruit, toffee, anise, and apple jump out. The palate is warm and round, the toffee turns towards a salted caramel hint with notes of guava, cinnamon, treacle and to my palate a rich coffee finish. If you are a whiskey drinker looking to get into rum, this is a no-brainer, and to our rum drinkers out there, this is a must have!
