Nobody ever believes us when we say we've found a delicious young Mortlach. Everyone wishes it was heavily sherried and 30 years old, but they can't all be beasts. This special whisky is no less impressive than one of its older siblings—just for different reasons. The wonderful distillery on edge of Dufftown is one of the few that we haven't yet been allowed to visit. Their recent release of some proper single malt at an relatively affordable price point is one of the most successful new offerings from Diageo and a complete reversal from the dismal attempt they made to over-premiumize the distillery a few years ago. That said, no one questions the inherent quality of the top notch spirit coming out of Mortlach. We're always looking to offer something from them, young or old, because we know that no matter who picks it up, there's a great chance they'll enjoy it. The beefy, almost savory style isn't simply the result the distillery's predilection for sherry barrels, but the result of an unusual distillation schema equating to 2.81 distillations. We usually expect more distillation to offer a softer smooth product, but in this case the odd mixture of distilled heads and tails blended offers something far from expected. Never a slouch even if not coupled with the sherry it loves so well, this gorgeous cask offers you the true nature of this wild distillate on full display. A relatively active hoggie does little to tame the beast within. Bottled at 57.8%, add a bit of water.
