No. 4 on Bob Campbell's list of Top Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs of 2018! A break-through vintage for winemaker Simon Waghorn. The Astrolabe Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is made from grapes grown across three Marlborough sub-regions: the Wairau Valley, the Awatere Valley and the Kekerengu Coast. The skill is not only in the sourcing of such pure fruit but also in the skillful belnding of many components to create a seamless, complex wine with phenomenal texture a persistent flavor.

Astrolabe is dedicated to making truly hand crafted wines that express a unique sense of terroir. Their attention to quality starts in sourcing grapes from the top vineyard sites in Marlborough. What ends up in the bottle is something that is noticeably more refined than the simple fruity white wines of Marlborough's past. The nose is characteristically tropical and fruity--but delicately and elegantly so--with the faintest hint of sweet herbs--mint or sweet basil maybe. On the palate, the wine is dry, crisp, salty and savory, with mouth watering acidity and silky round texture. This is a sophisticated wine that truly expresses something in Sauvignon blanc that cannot be found elsewhere in the world.

Part of Simon’s brilliant craft is his ability to build beautiful blends from multiple vineyard sources within Marlborough, each with their own subclimates and flavor profiles. The end result is a masterful blend that balances complexity, brightness, and gorgeous fruit character. The 2018 Astrolabe has an elegant nose with notes of honey comb, lemon blossoms, and subtle hints of passion fruit and flint. On the palate, you’ll find plenty of lime, stone fruits and minerality. There is just a touch more weight on the body of this wine than a typical Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and along with its bright snap of acidity, this is a serious wine that shows how good the best of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc can truly be.

Classic Marlborough Sauv Blanc without any cloying stereotypes! The tropical fruit is there, plus lush stonefruit, but both are lifted by bright acidity and a crisp finish. This is a sophisticated white that still feels fresh enough for a summer day. The food pairings are endless, and it’s barely twenty bucks for one of the most serious producers in NZ. Wow.

Astrolabe arrives just in time to replace the breakout hit from Fromm and save your summer. Gorgeous tropical fruit flies out of the glass without a moment's hesitation. Tautly balanced and intensely aromatic, it defies logic with a wealth of passion fruit and guava but a firmly crunchy, dry finish. This wine is what caused us to fall in love with New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, which is something I have had more and more trouble finding in recent months. The enviable freshness and ease will have you coming back for more every time. Get it before it's gone.

The Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough is a huge pleasure to drink. It not only has the grapefruit like, extroverted character that this region is famous for, but it also has very nice texture and body. This is still a very refreshing drink that would be at home on the porch on a hot summer day, but it has the concentration to pair with nice food, like a warm goat cheese salad or even a piece of grilled halibut.

A beautiful NZ savvy! Right out of the gate it has a surprise on the nose - it smells richer than most NZ sauv blanc, there is a vibrant grapefruit component to go with the classic lemon/lime and touch of grassiness. The palate has great acid cut to go with a little bit broader profile than many. It tastes like perhaps it has seen a little extended time on the lees with a hint of biscuit and fresh baked bread. While delightful on its own, the wine really should shine with food. Any fish dish or chicken would do nicely.

Astrolabe takes me back to the days when Marlborough offered some of the best cost to quality drinking in the Sauvignon Blanc category. The Astrolabe has all that freshness but a very serious undertone that speaks of the quality this producer is offering. Also reminiscent of the Cloudy Bay of yore, this has all those beautiful tropical notes and zestiness that makes these wines so much fun to drink. I can think of nothing better than drinking this with a nice piece of sauteed halibut, some grilled asparagus and creamy celery root puree.

Few wines scream summertime more than fresh squeezed New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. They are the perfect pool party or happy hour wine. There is so much bright zesty fruit here that you can use it to slake your thirst or use it to wash down fresh crudo or a shrimp salad with mango. We’ve had tremendous response with Astrolabe and this wine carries the tradition. It’s packed with both juicy tropical and stone fruit. The fruit is complemented by the fresh cut herbs and bright acidity.

I never knew a complex and flavor-packed sauvignon blanc existed until I tasted the 2018 Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc! The aromas are -what I like to call a fresh bouquet of fruit (in this case stone fruits), white flowers and finishing dry, crisp with a tinge of savory notes and citrus acid. Super-balanced and refreshing, this wine certainly delivers so much for so little. You will not be disappointed!

This wine is fresh! The nose bursts with juicy fruits across the board. Orchard fruits jump up first with peach, nectarine, and apricot. Then it turns gorgeously floral and somewhat tropical with soft pineapple aromas and underripe melon. Giving these scents structure and support is just the right amount of herbaceousness: a touch of fresh hay, bay laurel, and basil. On the palate, the tropical notes take the foreground. It's refreshing, and I really love the way the wine balances just the slightest sweetness with some sea salt and zippy citrus acid. Hello, Summer!
