K&L Notes

While the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy may be unfamiliar to many here in the States, in Australia it is among the most prestigious honors a wine can receive. As our Aussie buyer Thomas Smith mentions, if our shipment of this wine wasn’t on the water when it got this accolade, there would be no way we could get this kind of quantity or pricing. We’re thrilled to be able to share this lucky break with our clients. We're even more excited to find the wine is every bit as good as its billing. We’ve been singing the praises of Xanadu for years now, so it only fits their estate Cab finally earned its due. If you are a regular reader, you’ll likely already know we are fixated on the wines out of Australia’s Margaret River. Not only are they top quality, but they also consistently offer some of the best values anywhere, and this stunning 2016 Cab is a perfect example. Dollar for dollar, you won’t find a more compelling Cab.

Xanadu has been in the winemaking game in Margaret River for decades now and really has got a great hold on what it means to make a Cabernet that is distinctly that region. The eucalyptus plays a huge role in the taste of these wines and gives it a unique flavor very specific to this site. Very few places can claim the influence of terroir like Margaret River can. Fine tannin and fresh acidity give this wine nice structure and length, and while there is some dark fruit notes you expect of Cabernet, this is not a soft, jammy, ripe-style wine. It is bold and savory and a fantastic example of this phenomenal region.

Since 1962, the Melbourne Wine Show reviews thousands of wines submitted from across Australia, and after several rounds of eliminations, awards the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy to the best wine in the competition. In 2018, this was that wine. Named for the Melbourne wine legend who helped revolutionize fine wine in Australia, these wines typically sell out across the country overnight after winning. I’m so thrilled we were able to secure an allocation of this incredibly sought-after wine. As for the wine itself, there is a level of focus and intensity that is, by far, the best I have ever tasted from Xanadu, and possibly Margaret River. There is mint, smoke, cassis, black fruits, and graphite, seamlessly interwoven into a gorgeous, full, and complex palate. Slightly more fruit-forward, this is a big, powerful Cabernet with racy acidity that perfectly supports the fruit. The tannin is fine, giving structure while allowing the wine to be open and drinking beautifully now. What a stunning achievement. This is a Margaret River Cabernet for the record books.

I loved the previous vintage of the Margaret River Cabernet, so I was very excited when our buyer, Thomas, brought in the new vintage for us to try. Like the previous vintage, the first thing that strikes me is the mint on the nose. But unlike the previous vintage, this combines beautifully with notes of chocolate, blackberry, and boysenberry, reminding me of high-end Swiss chocolate. The palate is lively, jumping out with mixed berry, plum, chocolate, fresh herbs, and that beautiful mint chocolate. This is an entirely unique Cabernet that for the price, everyone needs to experience!

Soft, supple, with hallmark Margret River herb notes, this is a heady contender for the workhorse Cabernet we all want (need?) in our lives. Pretty purple fruit notes, basil, mint, and light young tobacco notes all show up as the palate progresses; longer in the finish than you might expect from the price point. A crunchier style of Cab than the classic Californians we're used to in this neck of the woods, Xanadu is a fun, easy-drinking option that belongs in your repertoire.

The nose of this wine is aromatic, not fruity, it’s far more complex it reminds me of the old Sonoma style Cabernet Sauvignon, more green olive, leather and spice mixed with a lot of complex violet and lavender and a touch of cassis in the finish. On the palate the wine is balanced, shows excellent length and is supple, with smooth tannins, easy to drink wine. Less Napa, more savory perfect match for food, and for those who are Anti Fruit-Bomb!
