The Kir-Yianni Estate was founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris of the Boutari Wine Group when he spun off two of his best vineyards in northern Greece. The Boutari family is one of the biggest wine dynasties in Greece but Yiannis wanted to create a more terroir driven style of wine from Naoussa region that was also reflective of the new advances and technologies available in the wine industry. Now run by Stellios Boutaris, they have expanded to nearly 60 hectares with the primary focus on Xinomavro, one of Greece's most noble varieties. The "Ramnista" has become one of the flagship wines of the estate composed of 100% Xinomavro. It is aged in a mix of French and American oak casks for 18 months before bottling. It is one of the purest expressions of this grape and has great aging potential.

    As sold as I am on Greek white, we see a lot less Greek reds day to day around here.. Enter: Ramnista. The aromas in this wine absolutely suck you in. There are elements of dark fruits, plum intermingling with mushroom and other earthy components. You smell the wine in the glass and there’s something about it that says, “hold on, this is going to be intense”. Explosive on the palate components of sarsaparilla, and mocha framed by bright acidity, and rigid, rustic tannin. This is an excellent example of Greek red at its best. Ultimately, this is a really compelling wine that is true to its place, and shows it off in the best light. Lamb shank anyone?

    I'll second one of my colleagues below - this wine reminded me of a Nebbiolo based wine...that combination of floral tones, savory allure, grippy tannins, linear feel on the palate. Great little food wine for grilled meats and anything oily / fatty. Black and blue forest berries, dried herbs / flower petals, scorched early and shaved oak. Medium bodied, nice firm structure. Pretty serious little wine.

    A few years ago, I visited this stunning property in northern Greece. It was a warm day and we sat out among the vines having a spectacular picnic lunch. Shortly after we started eating a thunder storm seemingly came out of nowhere and chased us out of the vineyard in search of shelter. We sat in a little barn under cover sipping the wines of Kir-Yianni and noshed on the plates of food we could grab as we scattered. It is still one of the most memorable moments of one of my most memorable wine trips. It connected me to the wines of the region and the country of Greece. That trip put Kir-Yianni firmly in my sights and over the years I have tracked the progress of their winemaking as it has evolved. I liked the wines a lot back then but they have continued to grow by leaps and bounds (as have many of the other Greek producers I visited on that trip). The Raminista is a top-tier reflection of Xinomavro from the region. Having the classical spice and leather notes, it is rounded by precise winemaking that gives the black fruit a fleshy and appealing profile. A perfect accompaniment to most Greek fare but that day we had it with a lot of grilled sausages, marinated pork chops and vegetables. A fitting wine indeed for making new memories.

    Big time fan, long time drinker. The Xinomavro from Ramnista has been one of my favorite expressions of this wine for several years. It’s no secret that the renaissance of Greek wine is in full swing, producing some of the most interesting and compelling wines in all of Europe. Fortunately, the prices are still very reasonable for this level of quality. This is a classy little number that reminds the drinker of a Nebbiolo from the Alta Piemonte. This will pair brilliantly with a fatty piece of lamb with some olives and feta cheese.

    The nose on this wine is full of Mediterranean scrub brush, mixed with dried fruits and some campfire aromatics as well. On the palate one sees that this is not the wine for someone looking for California Pinot Noir, this is a wine with and edge, personality, a bit gruff and curmudgeonly yet with some inherent intrigue behind it. This is a wine that definitely needs a food accompaniment whether it be a spicy Pork souvlaki grilled over Mesquite or a heavy, dense Moussaka!
