This broadcasts its freshness and youth in its cherry-red color and berry scents. But don’t be seduced into drinking this now: Pulled from the oldest vines in Yiannakohori, the Boutari family’s estate vineyards in Naoussa, it’s concentrated and firm. There’s an iron filigree of tannins defending the fruit, and vivacious acidity underlining its intention to preserve the wine for many more years. Forget about this in the cellar for at least five years; then draw it out for a crown roast of pork.
The 2015 Ramnista is the winery's classic Xinomavro, aged for 18 months in 30% new French oak. It comes in at 13% alcohol. When last seen, it was a little tight with sharp edges-to some extent, that's the style. Let's check in. This has fleshed out nicely, seeming rounder and softer in terms of texture-but there is still lots of power hiding underneath. It pops up to the foreground pretty promptly. Overall, this is a bit more approachable, but that doesn't mean it's ready. It really needs a couple of more years to become more expressive and better balanced. In other words, continue on as originally directed. Everything looks good. (MS)
Bold and edgy, this wine offers aromas of cedar, violet, olive, dried herbs and pepper, plus complex flavors of blueberry, dark chocolate and smoke. Firm tannins and a long finish make it a wine for aging, but right now, enjoy with red meat, roasted vegetables or duck. (SK)
