K&L Notes

Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, the grandson of Sassicaia founder Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, ended up in Patagonia after tasting a bottle of Pinot Noir he fell in love with, and was told came from old vines in Patagonia. This wine comes from 60 year-old, head pruned vines in the Rio Negro Valley of Patagonia. As the name suggests (albeit in Spanish), there is no added sulphur in this wine - a rare thing that is enabled by the extremely high quality of the grapes and the attention to detail in the winemaking at this address. *Natural Wine*

Bodegas Chacra continues to amaze me with the quality and care displayed in their wines. Last year's Sin Azufre was a delightful surprise; I hadn't imagined finding modern pinot from Patagonia so expertly crafted and refined. This year does not disappoint, and once again I am floored by the elegance and finesse of these wines. Perhaps brighter in style, more red fruit than black, it features the same savory herb tones and perfectly integrated spice. The finish is long and clean, bringing with it the stony minerals I've come to love from the Rio Negro area wines. I would compare this favorably with Burgundy in the same price range; the styles and terroir differ, but there is no question that this wine is on the level.

A few years ago, we delivered to you our faithful K&L customers some of the most exciting Pinots from New Zealand. They are now a staple in our program and yield some of the most exciting Pinots at any price in our portfolio of wines. There's a new kid on the block now! The impressive Bodega Chacra Pinot proves that Patagonia is the new terroir to be reckoned with. The wine is complex with notes of black cherry, crushed herbs, red flowers and rhubarb. It is bright and focused and has secured itself as one of the top pedigree wines for the region. Drinking great now and should yield years of evolution and enjoyment.

This is always the first red wine of the new vintage in the door, not only because it’s from the Southern Hemisphere, but because this wine is all about freshness and vitality. Floral and bright, this is raspberry and flowers all the way. Slightly savory undertones give it a wild quality, along with just a tug of tannic structure to even out all the fruit. A super unique pinot noir, but one that anyone will gladly appreciate, this is one of the benchmark natural wines in the store, and is a great place for anyone looking to explore these wines.

An incredibly interesting offering from us, this is a crunchy, cherry driven Pinot that has a awesome prune, dark earth and green noted mid palatte that pushes well past my expectations for such a light bodied wine. This is such a cool wine project coming out of Patagonia that has been producing some excellent bottlings in the last couple years and the trend continues here.

I love this Pinot Noir. For many reasons, but first an foremost, it is just delicious. This is made with "no sulfur" and before you check out if those are trigger words for you please wait. This is not one of those wines. This is what almost all of those wines wish they were. This is meticulously made Pinot Noir (all Pinot Noir should be made meticulously), this is clean and very characterful but not funky there is a delicious savory note, but it is just a note. I love that this wine has a companion, the "Cincuenta Cinco", both wines come from the exact same vineyard, it is a chance to try two really good wines that showcase the minimal winemaking and the differences that it creates, I love learning oportunities! If you stick with me this wine has almost everything that I want from Pinot Noir; sappy fruit with layers of different colored fruits and berries, the right amount of earth and spice to accentuate and lift the fruit but not to interfere, enough acid to keep it fresh without being tart, a seemless texture that rolls on the palate and finally it tastes like it could not come from anywhere else other than Patagonia. This is special wine.
