K&L Notes

Domaine Senechaux lies in the heart of what is known as the Sheriff's Wood - Les Bois Senechaux. The current landscape of the property was developed primarily in the 1950s and tended by the Raynaud family. In 2006, the estate was purchased by the Jean-Michel Cazes of Lynch-Bages fame and its newest iteration began. The wines are made classically but with a modern eye towards deriving the best from each grape. The blend is made up of 47% Grenache, 32% Syrah, 19% Mourvèdre, and a mix of 2% Cinsault and Vaccarèse. Syrah and Mourvèdre are aged in one-year-old barrels from Lynch Bages while the Grenache sees a mix of some wood and large vat. The composition is always a seamless blend of the best that this region has to offer.

This is such an easy wine to love, A burnished blending of many of the usual suspects that comprise Chateauneuf-du-Pape, this bravura 2016 bottling from Senechaux unveils ripe flavors of strawberries, red currants, wild thyme, violets, and licorice spice, with finely-hewn tannins and luscious acidity to enliven and stimulate the palate. Finishing with a velvety flourish of fruit, this wine will pair beautifully with a pork tenderloin, herb-roasted chicken or Moroccan lamb dishes.

This is an eloquent CdP with an expressive array of aromas and flavors - raspberry compote, warm spices and mint on the nose. The palate is a finessed burst of vivid ripe red fruits, morello cherry, savory herbs, and black pepper, with a mouthfeel that is full-bodied yet bears sophisticated restraint. A great companion to garlic-heavy dishes.

The nose of this wine is full of compact, dark fruit, laced with Middle Eastern spice and an array of ripe strawberries and cherries. On the palate the wine rolls across your tongue in a lush yet restrained rush, bursting with ripe fruit and a wild cherry confit-like center. The finish emphasizes the wine's richness with the bold, spicy Grenache flavors and textural presence. Powerful and rich this wine can easily be drunk now or will last an easy decade plus in your cellar.

The 2016 Senechaux is the most harmonious and beautiful wine I have yet tasted from this domaine. It is no wonder that under the watchful eye of Lynch Bage's Cazes family that the detail and balance in this wine are so evident. A lusty mix of currant, fig jam and blackberries unite with the classical dried floral and herb nuances that make Chateauneuf such a standout region. This has seamless structure with sweet tannins and underlying acidity. Though very approachable now, it is an almost charming yet classical rendition that is deserving of short term cellaring.
