Tasting Notes

One of K&L's very finest buys from France. This is a reserve cuvée, made from Millet's chalkiest limestone soils. There is a long maceration at very low temperatures to extract as much flavor and character as possible. The resulting wine is intensely charged with stone fruit and minerality, with bright citrus notes. The wines of this family domaine have been a staple here at K&L since the 1994 vintage when Franck and Betty Millet drove a long way (to Beaune!) on Easter Sunday to meet Clyde and crew to present the wines. We love these wines for their freshness, charm and affordability. The Insolite is all from the Caillotes (Oxfordian limestone-clay) in their holdings. The Millets are so proud of this soil, a few souvenir rocks are included in the wooden six packs in which the wine is shipped.

    This is one of our most popular Sancerre bottlings every year and there's no doubt about why--it's a knockout! It's richly textured with a chalky minerality and ripe tropical fruit. The laser-sharp acidity is so thirst-quenching and will keep you going back for more. It's a crowd pleaser!

    One of the finest Sancerres on the market today. I met Franck and Betty Millet in Beaune on Easter Sunday 1995 where they presented me with their first vintage. I loved the wine and the rest is history. K&L was their first customer in the USA. The Insolite is their top cuvee and is packaged in a wooden box of six with a couple of the stones from this famous vineyard. Though 2018 was a warm vintage in the Loire, this wine has retained its great minerality and it has fine acidity to balance the richness of the fruit. Some lime notes and white flowers-clean and crisp and delicious. A must buy for Sauvignon Blanc and Sancerre lovers.

    Staff and customer darling "Insolite" Sauvignon Blanc is back and better than ever with the lively 2018! There's incredible minerality thanks to chalky limestone soil (that Franck Millet ships to us with the wine!), plus vivid citrus and tropical fruit, a broader-than-expected palate and super crisp finish. This iteration has more of a pithy bite than previous vintages but stays as easygoing as ever. Complex and bright, "Insolite" is a bargain for sophisticated Sancerre and perfect for alfresco dining.

    Another stunner from Franck and Betty Millet, the hardest working duo in Sancerre! The Insolite is all from the limestone parcels of their holdings and that minerality really shines through. Chalky notes are quickly embraced by grapefruit peel, white flowers and roasted pineapple. The 2018 has a more lift and even more generosity than the 2017. Now a year in bottle, it is exquisite drinking right now with several more years ahead of it. Our best Sancerre, right now!

    When the Insolite is in stock, I would bet a hefty sum that this is the most recommended Sancerre from our staff. Heck, even when it is out of stock it is still pretty highly recommended! Ripe in mineral, tropical fruit, and grassy aromas, the Insolite from Franck Millet is consistently crisp, clean, and classy. With a fuller mouthfeel and a flavor profile of light stone fruit (think apricots and white peaches), pithy lemon, white strawberries, and a dry, minerally finish, the 2018 is no exception.

    Each six-pack wooden case of the Insolite comes with actual rocks from the vineyard itself, a testament to the pride that Franck Millet has in their terroir, and you can see why when you drink the wine. A beautifully full nose rife with tropical fruit, citrus and wet stone opens this stunner of a Sancerre. The palate is rich and ripe with a gorgeous acidity and mouthfeel, white peach, apricot with notes of grapefruit and lemon zest blend together and then give way to an incredible mineral finish. For the price this is an absolutely delightful Sancerre and a really pleasant surprise, and I definitely would recommend.
