Opaque ruby. Heady raspberry preserve, cherry, exotic spice and floral pastille aromas, along with building cola and licorice accents. Offers palate-staining red and dark berry, spicecake and, again, floral pastille flavors that show fine definition and energy thanks to a core of smoky minerality. Expands quickly with air and echoes the red fruit note, which carries through an impressively long, lively finish. (JR)
Lots of spring flowers, sappy underbrush, and ripe black cherry notes emerge from the 2017 Gigondas from Domaine Cecile Chassange. A co-fermented blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, aged in older oak, it displays medium to full body, the charming, moderate depth of the vintage, and ripe, sweet tannins. It’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate and keep for a decade.
Herbal, stemmy notes intrude on mocha and berry flavors in the 2017 Gigondas, a blend of 80% Grenache, 10% Mourvèdre and 10% Syrah aging in older barriques. It's full-bodied and fresh but also somewhat astringent and chewy on the finish. (JC)
