Coming in right where I thought it would after tasting it out of barrel last year, the 2017 Saint Joseph is a terrific wine. From 40-year-old vines, aged in 30% new oak, it maintains some delicate herbal and minty aromas, imparting a bit of freshness to the ripe black cherry fruit. Full-bodied, lush and creamy on the palate, it finishes long, punched up by a refreshing shot of licorice. (JC)
Blackcurrants, plums and licorice, as well as blackcurrant-pastille aromas, leading to a palate that has quite dense fruit flavors and smooth, peppered blackberries. Bold finish. Drink or hold. (NS)
Deep ruby. Ripe blackberry, cherry cola, candied violet and woodsmoke on the deeply perfumed nose. Palate-coating black and blue fruit preserve flavors spread out slowly with air and pick up a spicy suggestion of black pepper. In a plush, generous style, in keeping with the vintage. Finishes smooth, sweet and broad, with velvety tannins adding subtle grip to lingering dark fruit preserve and salty olive notes. (JR)
The 2017 Saint Joseph comes from 40-year-old vines and was brought up in 30% new French oak. It has a terrific bouquet of cassis, camphor, ground herbs, and subtle oak. This carries to a medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, balanced Saint Joseph that has solid minerality, good mid-palate depth, and a great finish.
