Tasting Notes

The incredible selection of Single Palenque Mezcals from Maison & Velier is finally here. Some of the finest mezcals in all of Oaxaca curated by the exceptional palates at Maison du Whiskey and Velier and bottled as it's found without any adjustment or alteration, these are the Palenqueros. Not only are these some of the world's most delicious and unique agave offerings but they're sold at an incredibly reasonable price considering where the market for rare agave is going. In addition, Maison & Velier are committed to treating their distillers right and highlighting their incredible skill and experience on each bottle. Senor Nolasco is located in the village of San Juan Del Rio in the Tlacolula region of Oaxaca. This village is regarded for high quality Espadin and the Nolasco name is very well-known. We don’t know much about Omar Nolasco except that he’s making excellent Mezcal. This is classically cultivated Espadin, but in the most classic style. Roasted over mesquite in conical earthern ovens and pressed by tahona powered by horse. Fermentation occurs naturally over 7 days in pine vats. The spirit is double distilled in 300 liter pot still to 55% abv.

At 55% abv, this is the highest proofed Palenqueros in the line but don’t let that scare you. This is not your typical espadin. The weirdest aspect for me was getting notes I don’t typically get with mezcals. The second the liquid hit the glass I smelled freshly brewed coffee with cream but as I went to investigate, that aroma quickly disappeared and I found myself smelling barnyard funk with wet hay, sour caramel, and after a while, a more subtle coffee note seemed to sneak back but with little commitment. The palate was wonderfully balanced and had a nice, acidic structure to it with grassy notes, black salted caramel, and quince. As the finish came up there was a subtle spice note that lingered along with slightly sweet melon rind. Definitely unique in the world of espadins on the market.
