A wealth of fresh, ripe berries with a slew of rich dark chocolate on the nose, leading to a palate that has deeply fleshy and nicely nuanced, ripe red and dark berries in abundance. This is nicely cut indeed.
Clos de Luz has a new Syrah, of which I tasted two very different vintages: the 2017 Azuda Syrah and the following year, the 2018. This 2017 was produced with grapes from a low-yielding year that was warm and dry, when the grapes achieved high ripeness. The vines are trellised and were planted 10 years ago on granite soils at the top of the slopes. It fermented in open bins with indigenous yeasts and matured in used 300-liter oak barrels for one year. There is a meaty and smoky quality, with a floral undertone. It has varietal characteristics and very tasty flavors that are pungent and persistent, and it finishes dry, with the granite sensation on the palate. (LG)
