K&L Notes

96 points Winedoctor.com: "A challenging vintage, with a touch of frost in spring, poor weather during flowering, and a warm summer. At each point they lost volume, in total 50%, the end result a small but rich harvest. It was bottled in December 2017, after about five years on the lees, earlier than usual, as Nicolas felt the wine was evolving an overly rich style and needed to come off its lees. It has a pale polished gold, with green tints. This is followed by a nose of crushed orchard fruits, with some exotic notes too, of mango, lychee and white pepper. The palate is no less convincing, with a very broad and rich substance and a creamed fruit texture, all cut with charming threads of acid and mineral. A quite captivating style. Excellent. I suspect Nicolas made the right decision here. From a 2019 update." 96/100 (02/2019)

What an intriguing wine! The region of Muscadet is undergoing a renaissance in winemaking. Many new Cru appellations have been added to the region focusing on individual terroirs and soil types. These new Crus also allow the wines to be aged for an extended period of time on the lees while keeping them in the appellation. The whole Sur Lie aging (resting the wine on the fine residue of yeast and particulate matter) is what gives Muscadet its racy mineral character, allowing the wines to build in complexity. For an entry level wine you have crisp apple/pear notes and wet stone mineral characteristics. So what happens when you do it for several years instead of several months? Well here is a prime example for you to try! Haut Bourg has been doing this for a long time. The "Origine" has spent just over 6 years aging on the fine lees in stainless steel vats and the results are quite spectacular! The wine opens with the classic apple fruit but as it unfolds more tropical nuances develop in the glass. It becomes lush and generous but still with great underlying acidity and an subtle smokiness that evokes the character of an aged dry Riesling. The wine is nuanced and complex. It some respects it is reminiscent of a great 1er Cru or Grand Cru Chablis. There is no wood aging here - this is pure expressive white that has a whole new dimension added to it. So, come explore these wonderful new expressions from a region that is currently on the rise.

This wine is a kick in the pants. This is one of the most exotic Muscadets that I have ever tried. Come to think of it exotic and Muscadet are two words that do not seem comfortable in the same sentence. That is OK, they are more than comfortable in the glass, in fact they are delicious together. There is fruit and spice and texture to this wine. It has the acid and mineral that you expect but what is on top and before it are really exciting. I am still trying to wrap my mind around it. I love wines that surprise like this.

Yes, this is muscadet, but with the volume turned waaaaaay up. Incredibly aromatic, jasmine and white flowers along with creamier, weightier notes soar from the glass. Bigger and rounder on the palate with touches of mandarine orange, it still possess that biting acidity and beautiful minerality. The lees contact is obvious here, but incredibly well done. Substantive and forward, this is a must-try for fans of muscadet.
