This unique wine comes from just 25 hectares of land along the Atlantic coast just west of Lisbon. Famous in the 18th century as a rich, oxidized dessert wine with strong acidity and powerful flavors of dried fruits, honey cake, and baking spices, these wines were as recognizable as Madeira and Port in their heyday and particularly known for long-term aging. History, earthquakes, and the more recent spread of development along the coast into Carcavelos's beautiful territory put the wine on the brink of extinction from which it has not entirely recovered, but the word is out, and the extraordinary power, deep flavors, and resonant finish on this wine is a compelling arguement for the region's preservation.
