The normally quite robust and meaty Champans is significantly smaller-scaled than the norm in 2001, but still offers up on the nose a classic Volnay mélange of red cherries, red currants, coffee, woodsmoke, soil tones and somewhere in the background a whiff of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is medium-bodied, complex and displays good shape and focus, with good acids and a bit of firm tannin perking up on the finish.
Medium red. Smoke and meat on the nose, with autumnal notes of underbrush and mushroom. Fatter, richer and sweeter than the Fremiets, with lovely mid-palate shape. Finishes with dusty, even, sweeter tannins. Showing very well today, which came as a shock to winemaker Renaud de Villette, who said the 2001s were very hard, and difficult to taste, following the February bottling. But then this vineyard was less affected by hail than the Fremiets. (ST)
