K&L Notes

Based in the Rioja Alavesa village of Laguardia, Artadi made headlines in Rioja and elsewhere when they decided to leave the Rioja D.O.C. a few years ago. A blend of various Tempranillo parcels ranging from 20-30 years of age, Viñas de Gain is the tasty, structured yet open knit and dark fruited introduction to Artadi's range of Rioja (well, not according to the label, but absolutely according to the wine's profile!). Recommended.

There is a beautiful crimson color to this wine. It is a modern yet classic example of Tempranillo, with a very well balanced combination of oak, fruit and acid. Cherry flavors with a hint of leather. You get a lot of wine for your hard-earned dollars considering that this is under $25. Even though it does not say Rioja on the label, it is indeed from the region. This is quality winemaking as you would expect from a producer such as Artadi.

This is a show stopper Rioja. Yes, an under $25 D*$% that’s good, show stopper Rioja. But not just any Rioja, Rioja Alavesa. Alavesa is the famed home of Tempranillo in the Region. It is the sub-appellation that has several unique qualities. For wine purposes, it is slighter higher elevation and has more chalky clay and limestone in its soils. There is a distinctive character to the wines that are made from grapes from the region. The fruit always has higher tones to it and there is a distinctive dusty mineral tone on the finish, wines from this region always stand out. That is why Artadi left the appellation at the end of 2015. They felt that their uniqueness was being diminished by the mass-produced regional blends that have dominated the region. This is a wine that refuses a definition yet it is so clearly defined. This wine is dense, both aromatically and on the palate. The nose is full of dark red and purplish fruits that seemed to be focused on earth, spice, and minerality. The wine has surprising weight and concentration it delivers way beyond the price point. Pure, bright, fresh, spicy, earthy and long. It is surprisingly good, even though you should know to be surprised with how good Artadi’s wines are

There’s massive depth here--when you lift a glass to your nose it’s almost like staring down into the blackness of a well. There’s a ton of minerality complemented by soft, incredibly balanced fruit. Lots of black raspberry, and ripened strawberry tones, but it feels almost darker than that. There is a Structure that builds towards the finish with tobacco notes and leather. This is an incredibly serious wine that checks all my boxes.

When our buyer Kirk Walker tells you to try something new on the shelf, you should probably just do it. Don't ask the price, just give it a shot, it's always worth your time, and such was the scenario when I approached this Artadi. Rioja without being Rioja the wine has a nice little sweet citrus lift right off the bat that settles towards those classic dusty, fresh leather notes with mulled spiced which reminds me of Christmas markets in France with their large vats of mulled wine to help ward off the cold. The palate is rich and robust with beautifully soft tannin, savory pepper and leather, and a soft elegant finish that is as laden with floral notes as it is with savory spice and sweet fruit. When I found out the price of this sucker I was even more shocked, make sure to add this to your list of Spanish wines to try!

I thought this wine cost a lot more when I first tasted it. Round and red with lush floral notes that drape over soft sweet red earth and matorral. This is Serious Wine, that scales up wonderfully to most levels of food pairings, but possibly works best with board of good cheese and fine meats
