I returned to the 2016 La Montesa once it had been in bottle for almost eight months. It has all the rosemary, thyme and aromatic plants in the Monte Yerga in Alfaro. It has a note of incense. It's super juicy Garnacha with citrus freshness. It's incredible to have this quality at this price and almost unbelievable that they produced 690,000 bottles of it. A steal! Drink through 2024. (LG)

Alvaro Palacios has roots that run deep into the soil of Rioja. He was born into one the region's most prestigious winemaking families, the force behind Palacios Remondo, yet his interests have always been grander. Rather than slide simply into a position at the family winery, Alvaro decided to go out and do his own thing for a while. During the '80s he worked in Bordeaux with Jean-Pierre Moueix, then decided to purchase his own winery in Priorat where he worked avidly to help put that region on the map. During that time, Alvaro advocated for the lesser known wine regions of Spain, eventually coming back to the family winery in Rioja. Once home, he set to work using his experiences elsewhere to get the business back on track, while at the same time rethinking exactly what Rioja is about. Today he's considered one of the region's forward-thinking leaders. There's a reason Alvaro Palacios was named Decanter magazine's "man of the year" for 2015. He's completely reimagined what it takes to make top quality Rioja, with the goal of maximizing terroir, cutting back on oak, and showing respect for the land. As a result, the wines from Palacios Remondo have become brighter, livelier, and more expressive since his return, but the best is still yet to come.

By: Kirk Walker11/22/2019K&L Staff MemberThis is a wine that perfectly crosses the Pyrenees. A wine for both the Spanish and French wine lovers. It is Garnacha, or Grenache, and I will leave that up to you to call it whatever you prefer. But regardless of the language, this wine is delicious. It is bright, with lots of fruit that is backed by spice and herbs. There is a lot of fruit but it is not a fruit bomb. It is an effortlessly charming wine that can be enjoyed by itself or with almost any fare.

By: Chris DePaoli11/22/2019K&L Staff MemberA difficult wine to review, this is a lot of juice for this price; with a serious pedigree that doesn't get in the way of it's incredibly crushable character. Deep red fruit, exotic spice, marzipan and freshness notes pop out of the glass and push into the palate. All of this lifted by a pretty structure that isn't kowtowed by the mouthwatering acidity. Great Party Wine.
