Coming from the eastern side of Hermitage (with more clay and limestone soils) and aged in just 10% new French oak, the 2017 Hermitage Les Miaux sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as ripe, hedonistic notes of red and black currants, incense, bloody meat, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. Ripe, sexy, and full-bodied, it's already approachable yet promises to keep for 15-20 years.
Inky ruby. Expansive aromas of ripe black and blue fruits, potpourri and candied licorice are complemented by smoky mineral and spice nuances. Juicy, expansive blackberry, bitter cherry and boysenberry flavors become sweeter and put on weight as the wine opens up. Gently gripping tannins lend shape to an impressively long, spice-tinged finish that echoes the floral and blue fruit notes. This wine registers a pH of 3.8, by the way, but it definitely doesn't lack for energy. (JR)
A blend of Les Dionnières (70%) and Le Méal (30%), the 2017 Hermitage Les Miaux features gentle cedary accents to the cherry, raspberry and black olive core of fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, this solid effort finishes long and velvety. (JC)
