Coming from the eastern side of Hermitage (with more clay and limestone soils) and aged in just 10% new French oak, the 2017 Hermitage Les Miaux sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as ripe, hedonistic notes of red and black currants, incense, bloody meat, and spice-driven aromas and flavors. Ripe, sexy, and full-bodied, it's already approachable yet promises to keep for 15-20 years.
Inky violet color. A deeply perfumed, slow-to-open bouquet evokes ripe, smoke-tinged cherry and cassis, along with complicating suggestions of incense and smoky bacon. Densely packed and chewy on the palate, offering powerful black/blue fruit liqueur, violet pastille and salty olive flavors that are underscored by a vein of juicy acidity. Shows strong, spicy lift on the youthfully tannic, floral-accented finish, which lingers with very good persistence. (raised for a year in demi-muids, 15% of them new, followed by eight months of aging in concrete tanks) (JR)
A blend of Les Dionnières (70%) and Le Méal (30%), the 2017 Hermitage Les Miaux features gentle cedary accents to the cherry, raspberry and black olive core of fruit. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, this solid effort finishes long and velvety. (JC)
