Explosive and unctuous in the glass, the 2013 Syrah Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard Sonnie's shows the more extroverted side of Qupé and yet the wine retains a classic sense of structure. A host of dark cherry, plum, pomegranate, menthol and spice notes are fused together. In 2013, Bob Lindquist used 60% whole clusters on the Sonnie's, an approach that worked out well. The 2013 still needs to absorb some of its oak (67% new), but there is plenty to admire and enjoy here. (AG) 93+
Reminding me of a quality St. Joseph, the 2013 Syrah Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard comes from a site located at the southern end of the Edna Valley. Aged 17 months in 40% new French oak, it offers up lots of black raspberries, dried spices, white pepper and saddle leather in a medium-bodied, supple, thoroughly enjoyable and balanced package. It, too, will drink nicely for 4-6 years. (JD)
There’s a coolness to this wine’s green peppercorn aroma, while the texture is warm and open, with a smooth, ripe plum flavor holding its more savory aromas to the edges. Drink it now with lamb burgers.
