Ferraton, under the guidance of Michel Chapoutier, has created a range of stunning Lieu-Dit bottlings that emulate more the style of Burgundy with their beautiful Cru expressions. Les Picheres comes from south-facing slopes near the village of Beaumont-Monteux. The vines are planted in alluvial soils that sit over limstone subsoil. Made from 100% Syrah, it is vinified in concrete, ages for about 8-10 months in barrel and then rests again in concrete for 6 months before bottling. Another beautiful near-naked iteration of these tremendous terroirs.

    Under the watchful eye of Northern Rhone icon Michel Chapoutier, Ferraton has become one of the best iterations for small vineyard/terroir bottling expressions in the region. Each one has such precise detail, they emulate a more Burgundian sensibility but still reflect their true expression of Syrah from each site. Les Picheres is a beauty, packed with red fruit, smoky nuances and a depth of flavor that embodies the chalkier sites in Crozes. It is layered and will unfold for hours in the glass now but this is a bottle that wants to spend a few more years in hiding. Give it a that time and you will not be disappointed.

    This smells like Rhone Valley Syrah, dark, rich and savory. This is not a simple poor man's version of some other fancier appellation that I will not name. This wine has guts and intensity. The palate is dark fruits that are backed with leather, smoke, spice, and dusty tannins. This is a wine that wants food, the heartier the better.

    First thing I noticed when the wine hit the glass, is that it is black. Jet Black. Midnight black. Almost startling as it comes out of the bottle. As for the taste, its all blue fruited and savory. Just like Syrah from this part of the world should be. But what I found really exciting was the level of concentration and power to this wine. Mount-coating, the tannins wrap around the palate. This is not your Grandmother’s Crozes. This strives to be something remarkably more serious. Big, building, and powerful there’s not an ounce of babyfat on this wine.

    The nose of this wine tells you it is Syrah, but it's whispered until it hits your palate, then you know it's Syrah. On the palate there's a bit of grip and grit, slightly rough and tumble. There's lots of wine lurking in the background for the patient.
