Tasting Notes

The incredible Domaine de Jouanda is one of the best estates that has remained essentially unknown despite an explosion in interest in the Armagnac category. Easily ranked as one of Bas-Armagnac's top estates by anyone who's ever tasted it, the family Poyferre has found success in France, but is not widely distributed stateside. This family, the same that once owned the excellent Chateau Leoville-Poyferre, commercialize their armagnacs more as family tradition than a profit-making endeavor. In fact, 100% of the profits from selling armagnac are returned to the upkeep of the historic estate where they're made, and the owners squeeze the brandy production in amongst other business endeavors. The Barons of Poyferre have owned the estate since 1880 and produced Armagnac there since at least 1887. Considering the commitment to tradition and quality, these brandies should be significantly more expensive. We pay a slight premium for the aristocratic lineage, but these remain some of the best values around. If you're looking for Boingniere quality at Tenareze prices, look no further than the fabulous Domaine de Jouanda. We tasted through nearly their entire cellar and selected the finest casks we could locate. The estate does not release casks or do any ullage until their brandies are at least 15 years old, so even older single barrels have incredible differences between them. This brandy was aerated three times before bottling adding elegance to the power of this youth eau-de-vie.

The estate at Jounada is stunning. It's exceptionally traditional and magnificently beautiful. The brandies are the perfect match for the elegance of the property. Cask #43, distilled in 2004 from Ungi Blanc (as are all of their brandies for many years now) is a prime example of the quality and balanced achieved by their rigorous standards. All of the barrels are made from trees grown on the property and staves are air dried for 7-8 years before being coopered. Barrels are repeatedly rinsed before ever seeing a drop of spirit ensuring that any bitter tannins are removed before the aging process even begins. After just 15 years the level of complexity is mesmerizing. This cask displays both fresh and cooked fruit on the nose, gobs of freshly caramelized sugar, a hint of saw dust savor, freshly tanned leather, and much more. The palate is even more engaging. Sweet at first and supple it runs through the market from fresh apples to sweet peaches and nectarines and hints of herbaceous greenery along the way. The finish is lovely and showcases high quality loose leaf tobacco, caramelized wood sugar, and a saddle shops worth of leather complexity. At 49% ABV it's big for it's age, but has more than enough stuffing to stand up to the proof. If you have even a passing interest in the world's finest brandies, this cask of Jouanda is a must.

The gorgeous brandies coming from the absolutely perfect estate Domaine de Jouanda are one of Armagnac's best kept secrets. In a land full of secrets, it's just incredible to me that this uncompromising an obviously special estate hasn't become more prominent in the eyes of the eau-de-vie loving public. We're here to change that and this deft 15 year old brandy is an easy way to draw people in. Unlike many of our other suppliers we noted exceptional difference between single casks of the same difference and therefore specified the cask number when ordering. Great Bas-Armagnac doesn't need to be super old to be ultra-delicious. If this was being marketed by any other source I'm certain they'd be asking for twice this price and to be honest I'd probably still pay it considering how delicious this is. But, what we have here is a truly classic example of what the greatest estates can achieve at a fraction of the price of what similar estates of this quality can offer. This single cask was aerated 3 times before bottling which is likely why it's so approachable right out of the bottle, where as many great brandies need tons of time to breath, this guy sings the instant is hits the glass. The nose is explosive and driven with unending number of sweet and savory aromatics - muscovado, birch, cola, camphor, newly tanned hide, underbrush, ancient cured oak and cloves. On the palate surprisingly viscous for the age, the sweet and spice continue to battle it out on the palate with the strong savory leathery stuff being saved mostly for the finish. This is a serious mouthful of flavor. Considering a similar vintage from Boingnere or Ravingnan might be 2-3 times this price it's a no brainer for anyone who has even the slightest interest in Armagnac.

Delicious and smooth armagnac that has spicy, toasty, aromatic notes that swirl in your glass with complexity and sweetness. Easy to drink as notes of caramel, light oak, tobacco and leather hits your senses. This K&L exclusive is a great buy!

While still relatively young in comparison to some of our Armagnac, this is a really pretty and beautiful expression of the spirit. The nose is very floral with orange blossom and white flowers and a pleasant little herbal back note. There's a good amount of spritely fruit on the nose and palate, rich and ripe but with a restraint. The barrel notes show similar restraint with pleasant amounts of oak and vanilla but they don't overwhelm the more delicate elements. A really lovely example of what Armagnac can be.

This is a powerhouse Armagnac, with plenty of spice, vanilla, butterscotch, and toasted almond notes. The length is incredible and persistent, which is not surprising given the 19 years of barrel aging it has seen. Not for the novice, this Armagnac is for those who want maximum flavor and impact.
