Deep garnet colored, the 1999 RunRig presents an incredible nose with complex and layered aromas of smoked bacon, dried mulberries, kirsch and leather intermingling with sandalwood, anise and potpourri nuances. Medium to full-bodied, this is a very elegant wine with vibrant acid and concentrated fruit, structured with medium levels of grainy tannins through the long and layered finish. It is just beautiful. Ripe and generous, showing impressive density without tremendous weight, this Australian red offers concentrated blueberry, plum, mineral and bittersweet chocolate flavors, all of which echo superbly on the well-wrought finish. Promises much with cellaring. *Highly Recommended* (HS)
Full red-purple; a fruit-driven bouquet with a complex array of rich dark berry, plum and spice aromas, then a super-saturated and concentrated palate exuding fruit, spice and soft tannins. One can only imagine that part of the concentration derives from juice run-off.
Dense red-purple color. Heady, highly concentrated peppery aroma steeped in dense, dark plum and cassis and backed by assertive yet harmonious oak notes of cedar, chocolate and vanilla. Robust and very concentrated yet finely tuned; dripping with layered, juicy, essence-like dark shiraz fruits and wrapped in velvety but firm tannins. Shows a polished but perhaps slightly raw influence of new oak. (JO) 93+
Toasty, roasted-meats, charcuterie bouquet with notes of camphor, cedar and chocolate. Intense, savoury, nicely matured: a very good aged wine without the freshness of the 2001 but a successful hot-year wine. Softly earthy, mature, and very good drinking on the day. (HH)
Shiraz and 3% Viognier. 80- to 125-year-old dry-grown vineyards located on the western ridge of the Barossa. Batch vinification in open concrete fermenters. US oak for the pressings. Rest matured in 40% new French oak. Broke the stereotypes of Barossa in their aromatic profile. Very deeply coloured. Some menthol, maybe even lavender. Perfumed and floral. Rich and spicy and full and very rich in the mouth. Scented but sill has chocolate-like tannins. Dry, dark firm, dense and powerful but not overbearing. Elegant in a big style. Moreish but may be too big for some foods? 18/20 points (JH)
