  Deep violet. Expansive aromas of black raspberry and blueberry, joined by exotic spice, floral oil and incense notes that build in the glass. Energetic and focused on the palate, offering intense red and blue fruit liqueur flavors and a spicy jolt of cracked pepper. Closes bright and long, with resonating red fruit and floral notes and smooth, well-judged tannins. 75% whole clusters and no new oak. (JR)

  Fresh and snappy aromas of boysenberry sorbet and rose petals are also Pinot Noir-like on the nose of this Syrah. The palate is extremely floral, like sipping from a punch of rose petal and violet, with a backdrop of black raspberry and white pepper.   Northern Rhone from NorCal! This is one of the best Syrah's that I have all year, regardless of country of origin. A deep, black fruited nose with fragrant violet and lavender, cassis, white pepper and a tiny bit of pencil lead. Amazingly, even better on the palate! Dark boysenberries, black cherries and (mellow) woody notes abound on the tongue. Long finish with spice notes. As Tina Turner once sang, "simply the best!".

  This is done in a clean and steely style allowing the white pepper, violet, and lavender scents to spread beautifully across the middle of boysenberry and blueberry fruit. The tensile mid-palate of blue and black fruit pick up hints of smoke and a touch of creosote peeks out in the peppery finish. This is a distinct and classy bargain.

  Wow, what a fantastic bottle of Syrah. With less than 13% alcohol, I can't help but think the spirit of Northern Rhone was made in this bottle. Is it Sant Joseph or Croze-Hermitage? Absolutely not, but it definitely captures that essence and style. Spicy with a nice focus on some red fruit characters, this syrah also is very aromatic and overall a pretty wine. If you love syrah, then you definitely owe it to yourself to check out Samuel Louis Smith's offering from the Santa Cruz Mountains. You will not be disappointed.
