Philippe Leclerc grew up in the vineyards in his hometown of Gevrey-Chambertin and learned from his father how to tend their vines and make wine according to the best Burgundian traditions. Philippe has a deep passion for his work, and aims to make wines with a modern flare that are still in keeping with the traditions and regional particularity of Gevrey-Chambertin and the neighboring appellations where Philippe’s vineyard holdings are. The 2017 “Les Bons Batons” is sourced from just outside Chambolle-Musigny. It bears characteristics of this famous appellation, including the delicate, understated palate, the elegant and pronounced aromatics of wild strawberry, clove, young cherries and a savory forest-floor element. It is almost a reticent wine right now, and certainly needs a good decant of an hour or more before enjoyment. It will very easily age into a lovely perfumed maturity with several more years in the cellar, but Philippe has also designed this little wine to be approachable in its youth. He recommends pairing this wine with a cheese course in its youth to contrast the bright young fruit against something with a creamy texture.

This is Philippe Leclerc's entry level wine, made with fruit from Les Bons Bâtons, a small vineyard located across the main road from Chambolle Musigny. It has all of the characteristics of classic Cotes de Nuits - delicately scented and flavored with black and red fruits, hints of black pepper, fresh wet earth and brilliant acidity that carries through to the end. This is an old-school wine of elegance rather than power - enjoy with a meal with friends.
