The Clos Rognet is a warmer microclimate and Jean-Nicolas judiciously decided to start picking here first in 2018 and the wine has turned out brilliantly as a result! This is ripe, but oh, so precise and pure at the same time, with the nose soaring from the glass in a blaze of black cherries, black raspberries, roasted meats, a nice touch of Corton spice, beautiful minerality, French roast, coriander seed and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and powerful in personality, with stunning purity on the attack, a sappy core, great backend mineral drive and a long, ripely tannic and beautifully balanced finish. This is a great example of the vintage! 2032-2080.

If you wait too long, it can be a monster,' says Jean-Nicolas Méo of his parcel of Corton Clos Rognet, which was why he harvested it on August 29th. Combining natural concentration and fruit weight with savoury, spicy tannins, this sweetly fruited, refreshing wine handles its 80% new barrels with considerable aplomb.

A slightly fresher and spicier nose blends nose of plum, cassis, earth and plenty of pretty floral nuances. The opulent yet powerful and focused full-bodied flavors flash evident muscle on the serious, very long and balanced finale as the only nit is a hint of warmth. This is very Corton in character and should age accordingly.

The 2018 Corton Grand Cru Clos Rognet is built for the long haul but evidently possesses considerable potential. Mingling aromas of cassis and cherries with notes of bitter rose, spices and truffles, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and introverted, with fine but chalky tannins and lively acids. Méo's two bottlings from the hill of Corton are arguably his most underrated wines, and readers with the patience to forget them for 15 or so years should give them serious consideration. (WK)

The 2018 Corton Clos Rognet Grand Cru is deep in color and sports a more opulent and dense bouquet than the Corton-Perrières; the black cherry, cassis and violet aromas are very seductive and generous at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, quite saturated tannins, and sweet and candied in style, offering dark cherries and allspice toward the finish. Fine. (NM)
