The 2017 La Vie Red is a blend of 31% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 24% Syrah, 10% Petit Verdot and dollops of other grapes, all aged in an equal mixture of used French oak and stainless steel for three months. This was in bottle for about six weeks before it was tasted. It seemed young but fine. It can be drunk a few degrees cooler than normal, but there is ample stuffing here for the style. Crisp and clean, this shows fine structure and that glorious purity of fruit. Tight on the finish just now, this needed a bit more time in bottle to come around. It should be in good shape in early 2019. Overall, this is a nice value point in Castel's lineup for early drinking. Maybe it will surprise me, but I doubt that there is any real point to holding this, despite the good structure. Drink 2019-2024. (MS)
