Faiveley's two parcels both face south, but the cool breezes that run through the Combe de Lavaux temper the sunshine in years like 2018. Typically fresh and aromatic, this has enticing raspberry coulis and red cherry flavours, textured tannins and some underlying salinity and minerality. The 50% new wood is finely integrated here. The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques is showing very well, displaying notes of cassis, wild plums, smoke and rich sole tones, framed by classy new oak. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, ample and enveloping, with ripe acids, powdery tannins and a long, fleshy finish. Faiveley now owns just under one hectare in this prime premier cru. (WK)
A cooler and more restrained nose speaks of essence of red cherry, black raspberry and an abundance of sauvage and forest floor elements. There is better volume and intensity to the bigger and more imposingly-scaled flavors that are also more obviously mineral-inflected on the dusty, grippy and even slightly chewy finish. Patience strongly advised.
