Modern, bright, attractive white that is built on grenache blanc with a handful of other varieties in the mix. White, stone fruit and pears here. Some gentle oak, used with the ten per cent roussanne and ten percent viognier. There’s a northern exposure to these plots and freshness is the result.
Bottled just a week before my visit, the 2017 Cotes du Rhone contains just 40% Grenache. There's 20% each Mourvèdre and Syrah, with the balance a mix of Carignan and Cinsault. Raised exclusively in concrete vats and foudres, it's a juicy, mouthwatering mixed bowl of blueberries and cherries that should please most palates. Medium to full-bodied, it features a plump, appealing texture and silky tannins. Despite pumping up the blend with other varieties, the shortage of Grenache this year means that production was down by 20%. It should still be a relative bargain. (JC)
Being bottled the week of my visit, the 2017 Côtes du Rhône is 50% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre, and smaller amounts of Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault, and Counoise. It’s a ripe, sexy little Côtes du Rhône that has tons of cherry, strawberry, and raspberry fruit, plenty of garrigue and spice, medium body, and a rounded, sexy style.
Bright and direct, with cherry and red licorice notes on an open-knit frame. Drink now.
