The 2018 Nuit Saint-Georges Les Roncières 1er Cru comes from a one-hectare parcel of around 60-year-old vines. It has a clean, precise bouquet of blackberry, briar, crushed rocks and light marine scents (oyster shell and crustacean), understated and quite reserved for this domaine. The medium-bodied palate offers sappy black fruit, displaying more sapidity than Les Bousselottes and fanning out gently toward the finish. This feels quite approachable in style thanks to its silky finish. Touches of hoisin and truffle emerge on the aftertaste. Excellent. (NM)

A touch more introverted than the exuberant Chaignots and Bousselots, the 2018 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Roncières unwinds in the glass with notes of blackberries, cassis, sweet soil tones and toasty new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and structured, this is a serious, muscular Nuits, with tannin and concentration to burn, but it's very promising. (WK)

The restrained nose only grudgingly offers up its liqueur-like aromas of plum, dark raspberry and cassis along with timid floral, earth and spice notes. I very much like the sense of tension and vibrancy of the saline, muscular and powerful middle weight plus flavors where the supporting tannins are firm more refined than usual on the velvet-textured finale. *Outstanding*

The vineyard of Roncières is south of the center of town, but tucked in between les Porrets to its south and Pruliers to its north and, to the best of my recollection, it was not hit by any of the hail in July (or only very marginally affected). The 2018 Roncières has turned out beautifully, combining great pure and sappy fruit with a good undertow of minerality, all harnessed to the powerful and broad shoulders of the vintage. The bouquet jumps from the glass in an excellent combination of black cherries and plums, bitter chocolate, a superb base of soil, woodsmoke, grilled meats and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and almost bottomless in the mid-palate, with plenty of sappiness, fine mineral drive and a very long,
ripely tannic and powerful finish. This is impeccably balanced and will be an outstanding wine in the fullness of time, but like all of the 2018s chez Chevillon, this will need some extended cellaring before it starts to stir. 2031-2075.
