Lioco has made a name for itself as a top-notch, boutique producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from choice vineyards in Mendocino, but they've also made room in their impressive line-up for truly unique little number. This 2018 red blend is mostly Carignan (93%) from a 70-year-old plot situated high on the slopes above Anderson Valley (2,400 ft. elevation). The remaining fruit is the little known Valdigue varietal from a nearby plot of 75-year-old vines. The wine is fermented with 100% whole clusters and put up in neutral oak for 11 months. It's easily one of the enjoyably drinkable yet truly unique wines to come from Mendocino and proof of just how much there is to discover up there.
