The 1996 Chateauneuf du Pape is among the vintage's more seductive wines. Deep and fruity, with gorgeous levels of glycerin, raspberry, and kirsch flavors, it is an up-front, hedonistic wine with surprisingly low acidity, and a succulent, fleshy style. (RP)
Medium red. Perfumed, tangy aromas of raspberry, cherry, leather and oak spice; distinctly Burgundian in style. Juicy, spicy and fresh, with good intensity and delineation and a sappy sweetness. No shortage of texture for the vintage. Finishes brisk, with tongue-dusting tannins and spicy red fruit flavor. A very good showing. The '96 and '97 Clos du Caillou Châteauneufs clearly display the stylistic differences between the two vintages.
