The Amorim family purchased this quinta in 1999, a prime site on the north bank of the Douro, just downriver from Pinhão. Having made their fortune in the cork business, they were in a position to hold this stock back and are now releasing a fully mature Vintage Port at a price that belies its age. The texture of the tannins brings to mind polished leather while the fruit feels more like supple velvet. Plummy and relatively light bodied, even as it’s chocolate-rich, this wine still has freshness and power, mellowed into strawberry-and-herbal grace.
Lots of cherry and dried mushroom character. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with a long caressing finish. Still needs some time to open. Better than I remember. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. Best after 2008. (JS, Web Only-2008)
Good medium ruby. Enticing aromas of kirsch, cassis, licorice, dark chocolate and mint. Richer, sweeter and more layered than the above, with lively balancing acidity giving the wine lovely vinosity and shape. Subtly penetrating dark berry flavors. Far superior to the above sample on the back end, with nicely ripe tannins and excellent persistence. Very stylish wine. Burmester was recently purchased by Amorim, the world's largest cork producer.
