The 2018 Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard has loads of personality and perfume. It offers singular notions of juniper and floral potpourri with accents of cinnamon, citrus peel, apricots and berry preserves. The medium to full-bodied palate is super spicy and fresh, silkily framed and finishing long and layered with just a touch of warmth. (EB)

The 2018 Zinfandel Jackass Vineyard is powerful, deep and savory. Dried herbs, licorice, pine, leather, spice and earthiness give the Jackass Hill a good deal of brooding intensity. These vines planted 130 years ago, yield wines of notable density and power. I would give the 2018 at least a few years in bottle to allow the tannins to soften a touch. I have said it before, but it bears repeating. The Martinellis are one of the great families in American wine. Grape growers and farmers first and foremost, the Martinellis sell the majority of the fruit they produce, and only bottle a small amount of wine under their own label. A total focus on the land and farming is at the core of what makes these wines special. The wines are rich and textured, as they have always been, but in recent years, the Martinellis have gradually given their wines a bit more energy and freshness. (AG)
