The estate of Stags' Leap Winery was established in the 1880s, but for much of the 20th century the grapes were sold off and the property was used as a resort. Winemaking returned to the estate in 1972 and it became known for its Petite Sirah bottling which it is to this day. Wines from this era were based on a 1930s heritage planting before they were re-planted or re-grafted.
